Design review, specification checks, value engineering, and problem-solving for contractors managing M&E projects. The engagement is deliberately simple: ad-hoc questions, day-rate support, or a retained arrangement if the workload justifies it.

This service exists for a specific gap. Plenty of problems need twenty minutes of the right experience, not a fee proposal and a three-week lead time. A spec clause that doesn't add up, a subcontractor design you're being asked to sign off, an installed system that won't hit design conditions. For questions like those, 24 years across install, commissioning, service, and management is exactly the right tool.

What this covers

Design review & verification

Independent review of designs before they're built, covering loads, selections, buildability, and maintainability.

Specification review & compliance checking

Checking what's specified against what's being offered or installed, and flagging the gaps that become claims.

Value engineering

Cost reduction that holds performance: alternative equipment, routing, and methods rather than spec-breaking substitutions.

Technical problem resolution

Systems not performing, commissioning that won't balance, recurring faults. Diagnosis from someone with a service background.

Construction-phase support

Technical submittal reviews, RFI responses, and O&M documentation review.

Where this gets used

The requests that fit this service best look like this: a contractor asked to accept a subcontractor's VRF design who wants it checked first; a value engineering pass on a mechanical package that has drifted over budget; an installed system generating complaints the original designer can't explain; a second opinion on plant selections before a six-figure order. In every case it's a decision that needs experience applied quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How does the engagement work?

Three modes: one-off questions and reviews at a fixed price, day-rate support for anything open-ended, and retained arrangements where you want guaranteed availability. There's no minimum engagement, and small questions are welcome.

Is the support remote or on site?

Remote. Review and diagnosis work runs perfectly well over drawings, photos, commissioning data, and a call, and that is how every job is delivered. Where a problem genuinely needs eyes on the installation, your own people on site are the eyes and I work from what they send back.

How quickly can you look at something?

You'll have a response within 24 hours, usually sooner. If it's urgent, say so. A system down in an occupied building gets treated differently to a tender query.

What kind of problems fit this service?

Anything mechanical, and most things M&E: HVAC and refrigeration performance issues, design and specification questions, commissioning problems, equipment selection decisions, and disputes that need a technically grounded view. If it's outside my competence I'll say so and, where I can, point you at the right person.
